Cher, born Cherylin Sarkissian (1946—), first won fame in the Sonny and Cher TV-recording duo, and later turned to movies, winning the best-actress Oscar in 1987.

Many descendants of Armenian emigrants, dispersed throughout the world during the past two centuries, achieved prominence in science, medicine, business and industry in their new lands, and some have become cultural celebrities. (1) Aram Khachaturian (1903—1978), internationally known composer and conductor, said his work is deeply influenced by his native culture: “Being an Armenian, I cannot help writing Armenian music.” (2) The author William Saroyan (1908—1981) wrote in a spirited style that became known as Saroyanesque, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1939. (3) Chess champion Garry Kasparov (1963—) beat the IBM supercomputer “Deep Blue” in a celebrated 1996 match, though he lost a rematch the following year. (4) Andre Agassi (1970—) who burst upon the pro tennis scene at age sixteen with his eye-catching outfits, was the top-ranked player in the world in 1995 and 1999.
